**Longlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award

'Moving and profound' - The Times 'Heartbreaking' - Owen Slot, The
Times 'I'm in my early forties. There are days when I don't
remember the names of my wife and four kids . . .' In 2003, England
won the Rugby World Cup. Steve Thompson was in England's front row,
at the heart of the match, and at the heart of the scrum - one of
sport's most violent battlegrounds. But triumph came at a cost.
Today, he remembers nothing about playing in that final. In his
words, watching the tape back is like watching a ghost. The years
of hurt, and the culture of sucking up punishment and coming back
for more, have taken a terrible toll. Steve has been diagnosed with
early onset dementia, and serious progressive brain damage. Steve
and his wife Steph had a happy family life planned, with decades
ahead of them. Now he needs to capture these elusive memories for
the sake of his children, before they disappear forever. With
stories contributed by his world-cup winning teammates and his
former manager, Sir Clive Woodward, Unforgettable is raw, powerful
storytelling. This tale of hope and courage stands as testament to
the ultimate strength of the human mind - and to a man no longer
pushing himself to the limit for competition, but for his own place
in the world.
This text explores how academics face up to radical changes in the
learning environment. With the implementation of new technologies
to support teaching and learning there is a need for more strategic
approaches to teaching and learning. At the same time there are
requirements to respond to a much more diverse student body and
therfore a greater need for staff developments to help the teachers
and the learners to cope with the new environments for learning.
The economic depression of the interwar period marks a fundamental
turning-point in Welsh history, and in particular the history of
south Wales, when decades of breakneck industrialisation,
urbanisation and in-migration came to an end and were followed by a
period scarred by unemployment, poverty and emigration. This study
examines the human costs of unemployment and poverty through a
study of the health of the population of south Wales.
It contributes to the "healthy or hungry thirties" debate about the
effects of unemployment and poverty on health in interwar Britain
through an examination of south Wales, the region of Britain that
experienced the highest levels of levels of unemployment and the
greatest degrees of poverty. It examines patterns of health and
mortality in different types of community in south Wales and
undertakes a systematic and rigorous examination of the statistical
data. Chapters on the working-class domestic economy, housing,
environment, diet and medical services ascertain the consequences
of unemployment and poverty on the everyday lives of working-class
families.
In 2003, England won the Rugby World Cup. Steve Thompson was there,
in England's front row, at the heart of the match, and at the heart
of the scrum - one of sport's most destructive, repetitive impacts.
But the triumphs came at a cost. When rugby union turned
professional, Steve was plunged into a game where raw power meant
everything. Today, he remembers nothing about playing in that
final. In his words, watching the tape back is like watching a
ghost. The years of hurt in an era of professional meat shields,
and the culture of sucking up punishment and coming back for more,
have taken a terrible toll. Steve has been diagnosed with early
onset dementia, and probable chronic traumatic encephalopathy. He
is in his early forties. There are days when he doesn't remember
the names of his wife and four kids. Unforgettable is part sports
memoir - with stories contributed by his world-cup winning
teammates and his former manager, Sir Clive Woodward - and part raw
human storytelling. In it, Steve will make memories for himself and
for his children, and will relive the biggest battle of his life,
with his toughest opponent - his own mind. Despite the constant
reminders of what has been lost, and what is still to lose, Steve's
powerful story is one of hope and courage. Unforgettable stands as
testament to the ultimate strength of the human mind - and to a man
no longer pushing himself to the limit for competition, but for his
own place in the world.

A fast-paced and astute satire exposing just how far people go for
the highest-risk jobs in the City. Pressure is mounting on the bond
traders' floor. Millions stand to be lost or won. Jess is playing
FTSE with the clients, PJ's practising his poker face for bonus
day, and superstar trader Donny's in danger of losing his crown to
the new boy. Could they be headed for more than a financial crisis?
Steve Thompson's play Roaring Trade was first staged by Paines
Plough and Soho Theatre at Soho Theatre, London, in 2009.
A quick-witted satirical farce set in the Whips' office at
Westminster. It's a week before Christmas, and the new Tory
government is facing dissent over its latest Bill. With a majority
of only three, the Whips' office is out in full force, and they'll
stop at nothing to keep the strays in line. But they're in for a
long night: boy scouts are rioting in Whitehall, the PM's golfing
with the President, five Tory rebels are on the loose and the Chief
Whip's playing at Santa - could this be the beginnings of a
leadership challenge? Steve Thompson's play Whipping It Up is a
fast-moving switchback of a comedy, with more twists and
double-bluffs than a poker game between conmen. It was first staged
at the Bush Theatre, London, in November 2006, in a production
starring Richard Wilson. It transferred to the West End in March
2007.
